The Blayney Bear by Bob Jarvis
Chapter 1 - Born to Be a Bear
This is the story of a well known 'yarn teller', "The Bear".
Firstly, let me tell you "The Bear" is not your run of the mill footy player - he was actually born at the age of five years.
He never went through the pooey nappy stage or had a bottle or teething problems or nappy rash or any of them baby things.
He actually woke up in his mum's bedroom, got dressed in his footy gear, walked out of the bedroom, got on his push bike and rode down to the footy ground.
I know you will find it hard to believe, but this is a true story.
He arrived at the game a little late. On the way he was pedalling like mad but getting nowhere and only just been born it took him a little while to figure out the chain had fallen off.
lt took him even longer, still being a bit inexperienced, to figure out how to put the chain back on. Anyhow, to cut a long story short, when he arrived at the ground the full time hooter was sounding. He jumped off his bike.
He knew which Under 7 team he was playing in because of the colour jumper he was wearing.
His team was running a back line movement, "The Bear" chimed into the back line, took the ball at full pace and ran seventy metres to score a beautiful try right next to the post.
The jolly referee disallowed it because "The Bear" had forgotten to sign the book before running on. "The Bear" explained to the ref that he hadn't gone to school yet so he couldn't write his name so he reckoned the ref was being a bit rough.
The ref said, "l'll tell you what l'll do with you young fella. lf you can convert it, l'll allow the try."
He did and his team won the game. This was the start of a pretty exciting football career for "The Bear" which extended over many years and lots of different teams.
